Suppressed Late‐20th Century Warming in CMIP6 Models Explained by Forcing and Feedbacks

چکیده

For the 1960–2000 period, latest generation of climate models (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 [CMIP6]) shows less global mean surface temperature change relative to pre-industrial than that seen in observations. In contrast, previous (CMIP5) performed well over this period. It has been hypothesized suppressed late-20th Century warming CMIP6 is caused by a stronger aerosol forcing. However, we find be only part story. Not forcing marginally more negative compared CMIP5, greenhouse gas also weaker CMIP5. These differences are amplified sensitivity between CMIP5 and ensemble, which leads both cooling 1960–1990 induced from 1990, returning post-2000 toward observed level.

Synchronous population dynamics in California butterflies explained by climatic forcing

A long-standing challenge for population biology has been to understand why some species are characterized by populations that fluctuate in size independently, while populations of other species fluctuate synchronously across space. The effects of climatic variation and dispersal have been invoked to explain synchronous population dynamics, however an understanding of the relative influence of ...

Analytically tractable climate-carbon cycle feedbacks under 21st century anthropogenic forcing

Changes to climate-carbon cycle feedbacks may significantly affect the Earth System’s response to greenhouse gas emissions. These feedbacks are usually analysed from numerical output of complex and arguably opaque Earth System Models (ESMs). Here, we construct a stylized global climate-carbon cycle model, test its output against complex ESMs, and investigate the strengths of its climate-carbon ...

Radiative forcing by forest and subsequent feedbacks in the early Eocene climate

Using the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Earth System Model, we investigate the forcing of forests and the feedback triggered by forests in the pre-industrial climate and in the early Eocene climate (about 54 to 52 million years ago). Other than the interglacial, pre-industrial climate, the early Eocene climate was characterised by high 5 temperatures which led to almost ice-free poles. W...

Soil warming and carbon-cycle feedbacks to the climate system.

In a decade-long soil warming experiment in a mid-latitude hardwood forest, we documented changes in soil carbon and nitrogen cycling in order to investigate the consequences of these changes for the climate system. Here we show that whereas soil warming accelerates soil organic matter decay and carbon dioxide fluxes to the atmosphere, this response is small and short-lived for a mid-latitude f...

Missing feedbacks, asymmetric uncertainties, and the underestimation of future warming

[1] Historical evidence shows that atmospheric greenhouse gas (GhG) concentrations increase during periods of warming, implying a positive feedback to future climate change. We quantified this feedback for CO2 and CH4 by combining the mathematics of feedback with empirical icecore information and general circulation model (GCM) climate sensitivity, finding that the warming of 1.5–4.5 C associat...
